Tenor – relationship between the author and the audience

Mode – how the text is constructed (written-like or spoken-like)

Formal vs Informal Expressions

Information in an encyclopaedia is usually presented using clear, professional and often academic language. The language used in information texts, as we have seen, is:

·        formal

·        objective

·        impersonal

Gap-fill Vocabulary Activity

Vocabulary should be comprehended in context

Fill the gaps of the text

Subordinate and Coordinate Conjunctions

Coordination and subordination join two sentences with related ideas. Coordination joins sentences with related and equal ideas, whereas subordination joins sentences with related but unequal ideas. Sentences can be coordinated using either a coordinating conjunction and a comma or a conjunctive adverb and a semicolon.

Relative Clauses

relative clause is one kind of dependent clause. It has a subject and verb, but can't stand alone as a sentence. It is sometimes called an “adjective clause” because it functions like an adjective—it gives more information about a noun.

Encyclopedias are divided into articles or entries that are often arranged alphabetically by article name and sometimes by thematic categories. Encyclopedia entries are longer and more detailed than those in most dictionaries.

There are many encyclopaedias available online. Some of these are free, and anyone can add entries to the encyclopaedia. Wikipedia is an example of an online encyclopaedia. The information in these encyclopaedias may not be accurate, as in many of these the facts are not checked before they are published.
